Where do I start?
When doing research for a paper or project, the library has a lot of great resources for you!
The library's reference collection is the part of the library that has encyclopedias and other information texts that cannot be checked out of the library. You can find quick background information about your topic in one of these books! They are a great place to start!
The library also has a collection of nonfiction books that you can check out and use in your research. Search the library catalog to see what is available about your topic!

The library also has access to encyclopedias, reference books, and articles from magazines and newspapers electronically through the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) and Chattanooga Public Library. Try one of these!
How do I cite the information I use?
Whenever you use information in a paper or project that you got from another information resource (i.e. an article, a book, a website, etc.), you have to be sure to give credit to the individual or group that wrote that resource. Failure to give credit to those whose work you use can result in plagiarism, which is defined as using someone else's ideas or information as your own. Plaigiarism can be committed both intentionally and unintentionally, so be sure to always cite the sources that you reference when doing a project!
